jingle bell rock

Great piece about the Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping" here. I have to say, I could never get in to Tin Huey, but Chris Butler nailed it with that perfect slice of bratty gal new wave.

Am in Ohio after an effortless and pretty great drive through rt.80 yesterday. I bought all my xmas presents in 3 hours today and managed to get what might be the be all end all awesome mom present of all time (warning: spoiler if you are my mom and it's dec. 24) of renting a flute and setting up flute lessons for her. After about 10 years of hearing her say she'd like to learn, I just wandered into New York Music and threw down with this adorable high-school aged jazz piano kid who reminded me of my high school boyfriend (all the senstive poet/buttrockers in my town take turns working at NY music). This is yet another post-BARR inspiration. "How do you start something? You start it" are the first words on his album, and damn it, if that's not just some punk rock new age mantra I'm willing to bite. I hope my mom gets okay at the flute so she can play with her church choir - this is my secret goal. How weird is it to have goals for your parents?

Yesterday we took a survey of the worst Xmas songs on the radio, and I have to say that Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" is my personal least favorite, and I know I'm not alone in this feeling. I think Wanda Jackson is my fav. rock era xmas caroler and you know Bing holds my heart for the satin smooth fireside songs. Since I managed for the first time in my life to pull of my grandmother's patented delicate sandwich cookies both in form in flavor, I have had this weird feeling that I'm actually enjoying Christmas. Maybe if all goes well I'll actually change my mind about that McCartney song, but for now it is the least swinging, least acknowledging of the bitter feel of winter, least sonically or textually related xmas song blunder of all time.
